PAINTING PREPARATION

As a further development of the project, I painted my own self-portrait. This was a subject I hadn't broached for about four years! I decided to apply the same processes I regularly use on my film and TV images to myself, as this is something I have shied away from in the past.
I
chose this photograph as my starting point. Partly because I like my expression, and partly because I wanted to work from something that was
easily achievable by the students: ie not a 'perfect' photograph. (The best of
approximately thirty shots taken by myself at arms length!)
I transferred it into Photoshop to develop
my sketches.
I
used colour changes and motion effects to heighten the unreality of the
image.

PAINTING
PROCESS
|
First stage. I never draw out the image, I
find it too restrictive. I want my paintings to flow and transform as I
work on them. I put on areas of colour to map out my
composition, and began experimenting with markmaking. Some or none of
this underpainting may remain visible in the completed work.
Second stage. Developing the structure by adjusting the positioning of the features and layering colours. 
Third
stage. Further adjustments. Stages are not rigoursly planned out,
but it is useful for me to document the painting as it progresses.
